I had so many writing assignments,so I had to think deeply about which writing is my favorite and most memorable. Looking back to when I was about 24 years old, I already had two children and a lot of difficulties surrounded us. At one point I had to live in a domestic violence shelter to gain stability. One day at my weekly check ins there was a flyer on my social worker’s desk about an essay competition, with a prize of five thousand dollars. I asked her for a copy of the flyer because I knew that money would help me fill some gaps for my family. The essay must have included a brief background on your experience with domestic violence, how you would use your experience to help someone else that is experiencing domestic violence, and if you win what would you do with the money. I didn’t have much entertainment in my unit at the shelter, so I used that time to properly plan my essay. My main goal was to ensure that the readers are aware that I am educated. Sometimes, when you are in situations like my past, you can be categorized because many of the young women you encounter did not have as much as a GED. Therefore, it was very important that the readers were impressed and satisfied with my presentation on paper. I created a first draft and I revised it for several days. I can remember reading the paper to some of my relatives over the phone, asking them their opinion. Then I finally wrote my final essay to submit to the organization. Three months later here comes the results. Yes! You guessed right. I won! I won the essay contest and the five thousand dollars. The organization sent a congratulation gift basket and other incentives. The best part was the invitation to a domestic violence fundraising event. I got the opportunity to meet celebrities like Mary J Blidge, Deborah Roberts the journalist and other big names. As I walked into the room, I recognized a few of my quotes were posted on the walls as part of the decoration. What an amazing feeling it was for me to be honored that way for my essay. As I am writing this, I just realized that we can get to know a lot about someone through their writing. Hence the reason I really like Charles Dickens and his style of writing.
